Course History

The Evolution of Dumfries and County Golf Club
The origins of Dumfries and County Golf Club trace back to the early 20th century, when the growing popularity of golf in Dumfries outstripped the capacity of the town’s sole club, Dumfries and Galloway Golf Club, located across the River Nith. After a brief but decisive period of discussion, Dumfries and County Golf Club was officially established in May 1912, quickly attracting 230 members.
Course Design and Early Vision
To design the course, the Club enlisted the expertise of Willie Fernie, a celebrated golfer from Kinghorn, Fife, and winner of the 1883 Open Championship at Musselburgh. Fernie had strong ties to Dumfries, having served as professional at the Galloway Club. By the time he returned to lay out the new course on land from the Nunfield Estate, Fernie was attached to Royal Troon Golf Club and had contributed to iconic layouts at Troon, Turnberry, and St Andrews.
Fernie’s design featured two distinct loops, both starting and finishing at the clubhouse—a layout that remains a major advantage today, enabling two-tee starts, faster play, and reduced congestion.
James Braid’s Influence
In the late 1920s, five-time Open Champion and renowned architect James Braid proposed a radical redesign. His plan removed hedges and ditches, replacing them with his signature bunkers, transforming the course from its agricultural beginnings into a refined design that still reflects the vision of both Fernie and Braid.
Challenges and Expansion
Both World Wars saw parts of the course requisitioned for agriculture, primarily wheat and potatoes. After WWII, additional land from the Nunfield Estate allowed minor redesigns and expansion. The 1960s brought further growth with land acquired from the Dalscone Estate, shaping the course into its present form. This era also introduced an ambitious tree-planting program, creating the beautiful, challenging arboreal landscape enjoyed today.
Modern Course and Greens
Today, the course spans just under 100 acres, enclosed within four boundaries, limiting further expansion. While compact and relatively short by modern standards, its par of 69 offers a stern test. Visitors frequently remark on the abundance of trees, blind tee shots, and—most notably—the exceptional quality of the greens.
Thanks to forward-thinking planning in the 1990s, all greens were rebuilt to USGA standards, making them among the finest in the region and a source of pride for members and visitors alike.
